A cover letter is a document sent alongside your CV or resume when applying for a job. It acts as a personal introduction and helps to sell your application. A cover letter gives you the chance to explain to an employer why you’re the best candidate for the available position. You do this by highlighting relevant skills and experience.

Not to be confused with the resume summary, cover letters should complement your CV or resume but not duplicate it.

If sending electronically, put the text into the body of the email rather than as an attachment. Applications should always include a cover letter unless the job advert instructs you differently.

How to write a cover letter

Your cover letter has three goals:

  • Explain why you’ve contacted the employer.
  • Provide insight on who you are and what you offer.
  • Show your enthusiasm and interest in hearing back from the employer.

First things first, you need to do your research. Take some time to look into the role you’re applying for and the company – and use this information to tailor your cover letter accordingly.

When writing your cover letter keep it brief, while making sure it emphasises your suitability for the job. The cover letter can be broken down into the following sections:

Introduction‍

Always try to address your cover letter directly to the person who will be reading it. Bear in mind that you’re more likely to receive a reply if you send it to the right person. If you’re struggling to find a named contact, use general greetings.

First paragraph

The opening statement should set out why you’re enquiring about the position.

Second paragraph‍

Cover why you’re suitable for the job, what attracted you to this type of work, why you’re interested in working there, and what you can offer the organisation. Give some insight into why you do believe you’re a strong candidate. This is a good opportunity to show off your knowledge of the company.

Third paragraph‍

Highlight some relevant experiences, demonstrate what you offer, and how your skills match the specific requirements of the job description. Emphasise what you can do for the company, including examples to back up your skills. Create intrigue by telling them exactly where to find your top highlights and accomplishments in your CV or resume.

Last paragraph‍

Use the closing paragraph to round up your cover letter. Reiterate your interest in the role and indicate your desire for a personal interview. Don’t forget to thank them for their time and consideration.

Closure

Sign off your cover letter followed by your name and contact details.
